The service pack is approximately 350+ megabytes in size.  Make sure you have enough time to download it.  An alternate way to install it is via Windows Update.

Windows Update is often mentioned in our blog.  We wish to keep you informed on the latest information from security to enhancements within Windows.

Please make sure you always update your computers with the latest malware and virus protection.  The best security is prevention not through computer repair services.

Mozilla upgrades a Firefox service that scans your computer for security updates on existing Internet browsers installed on your computer.  This security checker scans third-party browsers such as Internet Explorer (IE), Safari, and Opera.

The Mozilla checker is similar to Microsoft’s Windows Update that checks your computer on the first Tuesday of each month.  However, Windows Update only checks the Windows operating system and Internet Explorer.  If you manually start Windows Update, you often grow five o’clock shadow while it scans your computer.

We performed a scan on our test computer.  The service was very fast and reported needed updates.  The test reported updates for the Adobe Flash browser plug-in and release 17 of Sun’s Java run-time engine.

Run the scanner on your computer.  What do you bet your computer will need an update or two?  Be proactive and update your computer before you have to repair your computer.  If you do, you know who to call for St. Louis service and repair. 

Microsoft has issued five security updates today, Sep. 8th 2009? You can manually start the download by clicking here or automatically.

You can configure your computer to automatically update your PC. You can click here for the procedures. Doing this will help keep your PC secure and reliable. Although this update is not 100% proactive it is definately the best option available short of anti-malware and virus protection software.

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 is ready for download and deployment.  It will be available next week via the Windows Update site.   That is not the case at the time of this entry.  The current availability must be installed manually.

Things to Know About Microsoft Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista Before Installing On Your Computer

Microsoft’s FAQ section posts the benefits of SP2 are “security and manageability, overall system performance, and streamlined planning and deployment.”  In other words, network administrators and nerds will get the most charge out of it.  However, we recommend our customers wait to install the update.  Microsoft has a history of checking the bugs out once the updates are sent to the public.  That is a bit tongue-and-cheek.

It is impossible to account for all potential bugs that may exist.  Let the ultra nerds with steroids burn their computers with the update.  Once a week or so goes by there should be plenty of news posts on the success or failure of SP2.  Of course, we will install it on our shop systems for testing and will report back to you the results.

The final benefit of SP2 is the revision of hardware drivers.  This benefit provides the successful installation for newer hardware that was released after Vista was released to the market.  Without the proper updates the user is left with going to the manufacturer and downloading the updated drivers.

We cannot say this enough.  Just a quick post to remind you to run your security updates.  Don’t assume that because you have antivirus and/or spyware protection that it is updated.  This is the worst type of attitude to have on the management of your computer.  Otherwise, you will be in for a computer repair eventually.

The method to protect your system is by updating all software and Windows OS updates issued by Microsoft.  Today, I am on my way to a customer here is St. Louis to repair and secure their computer.  It contains all the classic symptoms of the most recent variation of the Conficker.  I’ll be busy to say the least.  To give you an idea to the extent of damage.  The system is completely locked.  The customer cannot even get the login screen to come up.

Don’t think April 1st’s passing was the end to Conficker.  In fact, April 1st was just a publicity opportunity for the media to gain attention to their periodical or news source.
