St. Louis Charter Communications Experiences Security Breach

by Net-Net Editor on August 13, 2008

This time Charter had notebooks stolen from an office that contained personal information of some 9,000 employees.  This is the second embarrasment for the company in less than a year.

How can any company experience or manage such poor security policies?  It is not like Charter has not had other problems lately.  Charter is is the third largest cable company in the country.

Breached security results every time in the lack of human and/or physical security.  Notebooks are tools to access data and not to store secure data.  Notebooks in such environments should securely access data remotely stored in the company’s secured data centers.

Secure remote access to corporate and customer data is available today.  The company should have clear security policies that prohibit the storage of such data on notebooks.  Today’s technology provides secure, easy, convenient, and accessibility that will clone the remote computer in the office.

Social Engineering with today’s technology is the primary attribute to secure protection.  Training is the best deterrant in the prevention of breaches.
