Here it is 2007 and as it is coming to a close. This is about a gripe I have with the St Charles City County Library.

The library has for a couple or three years offered wireless networking in the district, but it is full of holes. First, not all of the branches have a wireless network. The more populated ones do have it, such as Spencer (of course they have it as that is the administrative location too), Middlendorf-Kredell, and Kathryn Linnemann to name a few. There could be others, but the way the whole plan is managed who knows.

The technology being used is old news. The standards in place are 802.11b. If 802.11a is there it is news to me. As I have tried a couple of the branches and they crawl at 11 mbps still. Draft 802.11N is still pending final draft, so that gets the library off the hook at the moment.

The Spencer Creek branch has miserably in need of upgrading. The signal barely carries back to the quiet room. This issue has been the case for over two years.

Geez, run up to Best Buy and by some cheap Linksys wireless access points. Just put them in the armpit libraries such as North O’Fallon. I contacted an official at the beginning of December regarding the Deer Run branch. She said the North O’Fallon branch, the one with the ever costume changing Deer, will have wireless within the month. The interesting thing is there is wireless networking at Deer Run, for the staff, yet lacks one for public use. It makes only since if one is there why not plop one in for the public!

I’ll check Deer Run at the end of the month to see if I can get on a wireless network. In the meantime, give us a call if you need wireless networking installed or computers repair at reasonable rates!
